Haqabaas Village (December 29, 2025)

Islamic Relief Ethiopia (IRE) has officially inaugurated a newly constructed Primary Health Post in Haqabaas village, Dobba Woreda, in the West Hararghe Zone of the Oromia Region.

Equipped with solar power, the new facility is set to transform healthcare access for a remote community that has long struggled with a lack of basic medical services.

For years, residents of Haqabaas were forced to travel long distances to access medical care due to the village’s remote location.

Community members frequently reported that these journeys exposed the sick and vulnerable to significant hardship, often delaying critical treatment.

Recognizing these urgent needs, IRE secured funding from its family organization, Islamic Relief UK (IRUK), and intervened to construct a modern health facility within the village.

The project represents a significant investment in the region’s health infrastructure, with a total budget nearing 60 million ETB.

The new health post is equipped with a solar power system to ensure a reliable electricity supply for medical services.

“We are delighted to receive this health post,” said a representative of the woreda, Ato Michael, while addressing the gathering.

“The quality of the construction and the services it will provide are far superior to anything we have had access to in the past. It ends our long journeys for basic care,” he added.

Representing Islamic Relief during the ceremony, Mr. Jatu Gemechu, Senior Coordinator for Public Health and Nutrition at Islamic Relief Ethiopia, highlighted that the facility was designed to be resilient and sustainable.

He noted that the substantial investment reflects IRE’s commitment to delivering high-quality health solutions to underserved areas.

Mr. Ahmaddin Mohammed, Head of the West Hararghe Zone Health Office, also commended the project during the inauguration, confirming that the new health post fully meets the strategic standards set by the National Health Ministry.

Representatives from regional, zonal, and woreda health offices, alongside IRE staff and community stakeholders, were present during the vibrant handover ceremony.

During the event, IRE was awarded a certificate of appreciation for its invaluable contribution.
